A CPAP Journey with our Mentor, Paul.

From Struggling Mentee to Successful Mentor: How the AWAKE Peer Mentor Program Helped Paul Beat the Odds and Succeed with CPAP

For millions of people diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, starting CPAP therapy can feel overwhelming, isolating, and even impossible. Despite the well-established benefits of treatment, studies show that a significant number of new patients stop using therapy within the first year.

We interviewed a WSCN AWAKE Peer Mentor to find out what it takes to succeed with treatment when it feels like the odds are stacked against you. Paul’s experience reveals not just the challenges of CPAP therapy, but also the power of human connection and perseverance in overcoming them.

Diagnosis and Early Challenges

When you talk to a mentor as passionate about CPAP therapy as Paul, it is hard to believe that he did not have an easy path to success. The startling reality is that he faced obstacles from the very beginning. Plagued by the side effects of poor sleep, Paul knew he had a problem; his doctor, however, was reluctant to test him for sleep apnea because he did not fit the stereotypical OSA patient profile. It was only Paul’s insistence on a screening that led to a home sleep test.

He was diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA, but his path to treatment did not get easier. Paul’s doctor gave him a prescription and sent him to a durable equipment provider (DME) that did the bare minimum to get Paul set up on therapy. Paul was sent home with a mask that didn’t fit well and a lot of unanswered questions.

At this point in the interview, Paul tells a story that many CPAP users will recognize:

  • sleepless nights
  • nasal congestion
  • feeling unrested
  • DMEs who wouldn’t return phone calls
  • doctors who didn’t have answers
  • a general feeling of hopelessness that drives many to quit therapy

His experience is a window into the common frustrations faced by countless people starting out with CPAP—and how one pivotal connection can change everything.

The Turning Point: Connecting with an AWAKE Peer Mentor

One thing that worked in Paul’s favor was his determination to succeed. Motivated by a family tragedy–an older brother who died at 43 years old from untreated sleep apnea–as well as a deep desire to feel better, Paul went online in search of the answers and support. That’s when he came across WSCN’s AWAKE Peer Mentor program.

In connecting with a mentor who truly listened and understood the realities of life on CPAP, Paul finally found the practical advice, empathy, and encouragement he had been missing. Through weekly candid conversations and shared experiences, he learned not only how to solve technical issues like mask leaks and discomfort, but also how to develop the right mindset for long-term success.

“We had a different sleep apnea diagnosis,” Paul says, “but what we had in common was our use of the equipment. My mentor couldn’t give me medical advice, but he could tell me what to do if I had a mask leak or encourage me to continue therapy and seek help when I was experiencing side effects.

“He told me something that I will never forget. He said, ‘sleep apnea doesn’t care about what it’s doing to you on the inside–driving high blood pressure, creating the possibility of strokes, increasing your risk of car accidents. But the one thing that is in your control is your ability to use the machine and to be compliant so you can reap the benefits.’ And I did feel the benefits. I’m not saying there weren’t times when I wanted to quit therapy, but I now have good blood pressure, I’m so much more awake during the day, and I haven’t gotten into car accidents in a long time (I used to get so drowsy during long drives as a sales rep). That keeps me going.”

Paying It Forward: Becoming a Mentor

With ongoing support and the right equipment, Paul’s nightly battles gradually turned into a routine he could manage—and even embrace. The combination of personalized mentorship and a better-fitting mask allowed him to overcome setbacks and ultimately achieve 100% compliance with his therapy.

Today, Paul attributes his success not just to perseverance, but to the support and empowerment that came from having someone in his corner every step of the way. “There’s not a manual for this,” Paul says. “I had to figure a lot of it myself. Mostly through talking to people who were willing to share. I owe a lot of my success to the AWAKE Peer Mentor program.”

And that is what ultimately drove Paul to become a mentor in the program. Paul is now using his own knowledge, wisdom, and experience to help new CPAP patients overcome their personal hurdles to treatment success.

Paul’s Advice to New CPAP Users

Paul has helped many people who have found their way to the AWAKE Peer Mentor program. For those just beginning their CPAP journey, Paul emphasizes the importance of:

  • Patience
  • self-advocacy
  • community

When asked to share tips to help new users to find the same success he’s had, Paul recommends the following:

Keep a sleep journal to track progress and challenges.

Make note of how long you slept with the mask on, how many times you woke up, whether you took the mask off, and how you felt in the morning. For example, “Last night I felt [fill in the blank] because [fill in the blank].” This helps you see patterns and progress. It can be used when you speak with your care provider or when you need a reminder of how far you’ve come.

Actively communicate with healthcare providers about mask fit and comfort.

Most people just take what they are given and quietly fail. Paul says his success comes from believing he deserves everything he needs to feel better–whether that’s a better mask, more support, or help resolving side effects like severe nasal congestion–and that means advocating for himself when he is not getting those things. He admits to having “fired” one unhelpful DME and asking his doctor to send his prescription somewhere else. He has been lucky to have found an exemplary DME along the way. One who listened and answered questions. He knows good care exists and he encourages others to find providers who are willing to give the time, education, and support new patients are looking for.

Seek additional support—whether from mentorship programs, online communities, or trusted friends.

No one knows everything they need to know to overcome challenges on their own. It is only through community sharing that the struggles feel manageable and motivation can be sustained.

“Remember,” Paul says, “it’s not unusual to struggle at first, but persistence and the right support can make all the difference in turning CPAP into a life-changing therapy.”

Paul’s story serves as a powerful reminder that successful CPAP therapy is about more than just equipment or compliance—it’s about connection, persistence, and finding the right allies. While the journey can be challenging, programs like WSCN’s AWAKE Peer Mentor Program show that with the right guidance and encouragement, even those who struggle at first can reclaim restful nights, better health, and a renewed sense of possibility.
