Patient Leadership in Research

As a patient, have you ever wondered or even encountered that what researchers are studying doesn’t really match what you care about in your own lived experience? Do you want to help change that? Learn more about the PLIR Program!

One of the biggest flaws of medical research and publishing has been the failure of incorporating the patient voice and perspective. For over 30 years we have invested in battling this lopsided approach of answering questions that matter most to scientists, but perhaps not the person actually living with the condition. In order to drive change, we need knowledge, the tools to effectively use the knowledge and the feeling of empowerment to do so. This concept is the foundation of our Patient Leadership In Research (PLIR) program.

Incorporating patient voices into research is absolutely essential. WSCN is dedicated to being the bridge for patients through the PLIR Program, which connects trained patient partners who bring lived experience into every stage of the research process with active researchers across different backgrounds. The landmark program provides essential training for patients, equipping them with the tools necessary to contribute meaningfully to research teams and help answer the questions that matter most to patients.

This program follows the fundamental expectations for partnerships in research set forth by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). According to the organization, patient engagement improves study feasibility, acceptability and quality, benefiting communities and building trust among patients.

After a successful launch of the PLIR Program in sleep apnea, WSCN is committed to continuing to expand opportunities for patients to meaningfully learn about and contribute to research that represents the full 24 hours, for a fulfilling life.
